Humidity problems and solutions.

Many moisture-related problems can be solved by identifying their probable causes. If you're a tenant, it's essential to report damp problems immediately to your landlord, building manager or janitor.

Moisture problems in the home.

Humidity problems generally have two origins: water leaks and condensation.

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with a colder surface, turning the moisture it contains into water. An obvious example of this phenomenon is the water and frost that forms on windows.

Condensation can also form in attics, under roofs and inside exterior walls.

In the long term, if the air in your home is excessively humid, this can lead to structural damage, property damage and mold growth.

Causes of damp in the home.

The main causes of condensation formation include:

1. Excessive moisture production, which can result from various sources such as inadequate basement ventilation, inappropriate use of humidifiers, daily activities (showers, cooking), etc.

2. Damp basements and crawl spaces with earthen floors are ideal places for condensation.

3. Inadequate air renewal, where indoor air is not replaced by outdoor air.

4. Cold surfaces caused by faulty heating, insufficient heating of certain rooms, major variations in indoor temperature, insufficient air circulation, lack of insulation in walls and ceilings, poor-quality windows, etc.

Solutions for damp in the home.

There are a number of solutions to be implemented to solve humidity problems:

1. Reduce the formation of condensation by limiting water infiltration in the basement, stopping the use of humidifiers, and using a dehumidifier in the basement.

2. Keep surfaces warm by replacing windows with energy-efficient models, insulating walls and ceilings effectively, and heating all rooms adequately.

3. Promote adequate ventilation, sufficient air circulation and proper heat distribution.

We also recommend monitoring the relative humidity level in the home with a hygrometer, maintaining a relative humidity of 30% or less during periods of extreme cold to avoid condensation on windows.

In addition, installing energy-efficient windows can help maintain a higher relative humidity level without the risk of condensation.
